Does any one have any suggestions on what we do in Iraq? I mean the situation looks grim. Marines dieing, this month being the most deadliest month. Fighting in Najaf and Fallujah are parallel to the fighting in Israel and Palestine between IDF and in the West Bank. Insurgents are using RPGs and small arms to take down helios, and other armored vehicles. There is a lack of these armored vehicles, body armor and etc. What the hell have we gotten our selves into? Bring democracy to the middle east seems idealistic.
Yet at the same time we went to war for unjustified reasons, we yet to find WMD, and ties to terrorism not even proven. We lost internation legitmacy, and now we are stuck in Iraq.
Yes the world is better off without Saddam. Yes there wont be threat from there again, but wait, what was the reason, to free the Iraqis. Now that the Iraqis are free, they are fighting amoung themselves if not us. Common enemies are uniting together to launch attacks that fortunately arent coordinated today. Sunnis and Shiites long term enemies like the Jews and Palestinains are working together to kill Americans! Where does this stop? We cannot bring a democracy underneath a barrel of an M1Abrams tank. We need a better solution.
But there cant be a solution, because what we are doing in Iraq is to drain the "fever swamp", we cant fight terrorism on the defensive, we have to take the offensive. And democratizing the middle east is that solution, to ensure terrorism is not a hot bed in the middle east. But the people arent ready, and will not be for hundred of years. If given the chance, they would fight amoung one another.
The recent Wall Street Journal noted that in South American where countries have faced democracy for some time, majority over 60% said they would want a dicatorship if the economy would be better. So maybe the long term solution to a democracy is to instill economic growth prior to any regime change and any hopes of a democracy.
So what do we do? As Americans we must support our men and women abroad, and do what we can to protect our individual freedoms and liberties, and never forget that it is our obligation to ensure and develop the rights of others that god has given us.
